British Steam Locomotives is a series of programmes which looks at the power and majesty of some of Britain s most famous steam locomotives. Each programme covers an individual named locomotive and looks at its history, restoration and more recent working.
Volume One features:
Disc One: Flying Scotsman (100 mins) Known as the most famous steam locomotive in the world, there are few people who have not heard of this magnificent machine. Illustrated by evocative footage of the engine working on the British railway network in various guises, the first programme on this DVD traces the story from the time when the locomotive returned from Australia up to it s acquisition by the National Railway Museum at York. The second programme features its visit to Australia where it achieved it s most recent record the world s longest non-stop run behind steam.
Disc Two: City of Truro (55 mins) The 2000th locomotive to be built at the famous Swindon Works of the Great Western Railway, this programme is a tribute to the graceful Edwardian locomotive, at work on both main and preserved lines after she was restored to full working order by the Severn Valley Railway.
Disc Three : Duchess of Sutherland (55 mins) The story of the restoration to main line steam work of one of Sir William Stanier's magnificent "Princess Coronation" class Pacifics built for the London Midland and Scottish Railway. After many years of static exhibition it was the subject of a complete overhaul to restore her to her full glory, an achievement which is recorded here for posterity. She then returned to the main lines and her early runs form the main part of this film.
