Series 1:
Episode 1 – The Return
It’s 1946 and the dawn of a post-war period of hope and expectation. However, the reality of John Finlay’s “homecoming” is harshly different. The medical practice is run-down, the small town politics continue and his fiancée is curiously absent.
Episode 2 – Working Together
Although Dr Cameron is free to retire there’s an atmosphere of tension about his departure from Arden House. Working as a GP again Dr Finlay finds that health care for the poor hasn’t improved leading in one case to tragic consequences.
Episode 3 – Winning the Peace
What exactly is Sergeant Forbes vendetta against the Hendersons at Dawes Farm? The consequences draw Dr Finlay and Dr Cameron into a bitter conflict and more than they bargained for.
Episode 4 – A Bitter Pill
When Dr Neil visits Mary Thomson on a housecall he becomes concerned as to why previous medical tests have failed to reveal her apparent illness. He mistakenly becomes more interested in the treatment not aware that the patient’s homelife might be at the root of the problem. Meanwhile a smallpox scare causes an emergency vaccination programme to be hastily arranged.
Episode 5 – Forbidden Fruit
Dr Cameron’s work at the German POW camp brings him into political conflict with one of the prisoners. Janet becomes concerned for Dr Finlay’s career at his apparent fondness toward Anne Stewart. Not only is she married but a patient of the practice.
Episode 6 – The Good Doctor
Much to Dr Neil’s surprise a famous singing star turns up unexpectedly at the Arden House surgery for a repeat prescription. But why? A mystery unfolds as to the exact nature of her illness. Dr Finlay is still hurt following the end of his “affair” and is on the brink of considering a new life elsewhere.

Episode 1 - A Delicate Balance
Life at Tannochbrae faces a period of confusion as Janet completes her wedding plans and Dr Finlay investigates a suspicious death.
Episode 2 - Childsplay
A teenage girl looking after her two sisters causes concern for Dr Finlay, and Dr Neil becomes emotionally involved in the case of a dying TB patient. Rural medical drama.
Episode 3 - Stolen Lives
After Alex Grant’s death, it emerges his daughter Rachel has been incarcerated in an asylum for 30 years for having an illegitimate child. Janet is determined to secure her release, but Dr Cameron doubts the wisdom of her efforts.
Episode 4 – Burning Bridges
The renovation of Arden House gets under way, but Dr Finlay begins to wonder if it was such a good idea when Dr Neil becomes increasingly vexed. Meanwhile, Janet grapples with her own problems and Dr Cameron’s night-time call-out is tinged with tragedy
Episode 5 - Secrecy
The medic resolves to track down a mysterious man who callously ignored his request to call for an ambulance - and Finlay’s obsession soon leads him into a macabre world.
Episode 6 - In Arcadia
Dr Cameron feels increasingly isolated as the day of Janet and Angus’s wedding approaches and Dr Finlay is drawn toward the new National Health Service.

McKenna becomes obsessed with the wife of a wounded war veteran he is treating, while Finlay and Cameron are intrigued by a film star staying in a local hotel.

Dr Cameron agrees to help trace Millie Calm’s real mother, but soon wishes he had never got involved.

Family secrets are revealed when Dr Finlay’s mother comes to stay at Arden House.
Episodes 4 – The Earth’s Sweet Being
Dr Napier becomes concerned at the generally poor state of women’s health in Tannochbrae, and launches a bold new campaign to set matters right. Rhona falls head over heels in love, and two surprising would-be instructors step forward to teach the locals ballroom dancing.
Episodes 5 – A Natural Mistake
The Highland GP has a run-in with an old friend and later investigates what appears to be an attack on a homosexual : only to find himself caught up in a traumatic domestic violence case.
Episode 6 – The Greatness and the Power
Dr Finlay begins to suspect that Reverend Gill may be more interested in the pleasures of this world than the rewards of the next, and sets out to investigate. Meanwhile, his colleague Dr Napier delivers glad tidings to a married woman : but doesn’t receive the joyful response he anticipated.
Episode 7 – No Time For Heroes
A distraught Dr Napier berates herself for failing to diagnose a case of diphtheria, while Dr Cameron shoulders the melancholy task of attending an old friend who is hovering at death’s door.

Dr Napier is intrigued by an ex-colonial couple recently returned from India who settle in Tannochbrae and refuse to have contact with their mysterious daughter.
Episode 2 – All Jock Tamson’s Bairns
The medic temporarily hangs up his stethoscope to intervene in a confrontation between Irish farm labourers and irate locals who blame them for a typhus outbreak: resolving matters with a combination of tough talking and common sense.
Episode 3 – Days of Grace
Janet’s maternal instincts are aroused by the discovery of a dayold baby abandoned on the doorstep of Arden House.
Episode 4 – A Simple Operation
Dr Finlay stumbles across a murder while on a walking holiday.
Episode 5 – Mercury
A woman becomes convinced she has contracted syphilis from her husband, who indignantly claims he’s never had an affair: raising suspicions that she is the one who has been unfaithful.
Episode 6 - The Life of Men
A patient’s deathbed murder confession presents Dr Finlay with a crisis of conscience: should he keep a secret entrusted to him in strictest confidence or see to it that justice is done?
Episode 7 – Still Waters
Dr Cameron and Dr Finlay are given a frosty reception when called in to investigate an outbreak of unusual symptoms among the nuns of a convent in the Tannochbrae area.
Episode 8 - Snowblind
A festive special of the Highland medical drama. Snowdrifts cut off Arden House on the night before Hogmanay, forcing Janet and the doctors to face a long evening huddled in front of a roaring fire. As the hours drag on, tempers wear thin: and a few old scores are settled before the crowing cock heralds the dawn.
