Stan and Ollie often encounter trouble with the law. Frequently this begins as simple vagrancy but assumes further complications. They are spared arrest when agreeing to stage a burglary for a hopeless cop, and when begging for food from a crazed scientist are hired as graverobbers with a detective on their trail. Sometimes they are imprisoned and find themselves in a road gang, making ingenious escape plans or even foiling a mass jail-break. On occasion they are victims of crime, as when Ollie is blackmailed by an old flame. Stan and Ollie uphold the law by taking the witness stand, delivering a summons, acting as bodyguards and joining the police force themselves.
