  • Description

Scotland’s stunning coastline is an enchanting zone of endless variety, drama and historic resonance. Scottish history is etched into the landscape where the Atlantic’s long fingers reach into the heart of the country. In this landmark ITV Scotland series, we see from the air how man has modified nature: the great city of Glasgow, the fisher towns of the west, and marks made by lost generations such as the standing stones at Callanish and the Pictish brochs of Glenelg. The wild margins of Scotland have been shaped by the raw power of the ocean, from the cliffs at Cape Wrath to the jagged ridge of the Cuillin, where sea eagles take to the skies and bottle-nosed dolphins frolic in the surrounding waters.

The eastern shoreline reveals every trace of human impact on these lands, from stone-age burial chambers and ancient harbours to medieval churches, royal castles, millionaires’ palaces, impressive bridges, land fortresses, gun emplacements, North Sea drilling rigs and the roar and flare of petrochemical plants. There are also long stretches of gentle woodland, mile after mile of gleaming sands, tranquil sea lochs, sand bars where hundreds of grey seals sun themselves, marshlands visited by thousands of migrating birds, and dozens of picturesque red-roofed fishing villages.

The helicopter-mounted cameras of Scotland: Edge of the Land give a fascinating bird’s-eye view of these unceasingly surprising shores.
