Directed by William Wellman (A Star is Born), GI Joe is based on Ernie Pyle's (Burgess Meredith's) experiences with an Army infantry unit during the invasion of Italy.
Pyle befriends several of the soldiers, including commanding officer Bill Walker (Robert Mitchum), family man Sgt. Warnicki (Freddie Steele) and would-be romeo Pvt. Dondaro (Wally Cassell) and reports on the everyday trials and tribulations of the humble foot soldier.
Featuring the breakthrough performance from Robert Mitchum, The Story of GI Joe received four Oscar nominations including Best Supporting Actor, Screenplay, Original Song and Music.
