In a nail-biting encounter, neither side could break the deadlock in 90 minutes, but just 60 seconds into extra time, Iwan Roberts scored for Norwich to put them in front. At least it gave Birmingham time to recover and Geoff Horsfield's goal before the end of the first extra period took the game to the dreaded penalty shoot-out. Norwich missed twice to allow Carter that golden moment and send 35,000 Bluenoses ecstatic.
