George Best was the most naturally gifted British footballer of modern times. From his first days in England it was evident that the shy, homesick Irish boy was special. The talent he paraded, with his football wizardry, assured George of rapid promotion to Manchester United's first team. He remained there for that vintage side's most dazzling years: an era that effectively ended in 1968 with the European Cup triumph in which he played an inspirational part.
George Best the footballer was practically flawless. He had the assets to be outstanding in any position. And, aside from his legendary skill and speed, George was also deceptively tough, could tackle like a full-back and launch sinuous sorties with which he destroyed defenses single handedly. Yet, in the end, he was unable to handle the goldfish bowl existence and fame which was thrust upon him.
