Victoria Wood - As Seen On TV

Now acclaimed as the funniest woman of all time (Radio Times Poll 2006), Victoria Wood's 1980 series As Seen On TV established her as a major name in British comedy.
The series, including sketches, stand-up and songs, showcased her sharp writing and ability to create a rich tapestry of sympathetic but hilarious characters. The show also established an ensemble of excellent actors - her long time comedy partner Julie Walters alongside Celia Imrie, Duncan Preston and Susie Blake with early appearances for Patricia Routledge, Jim Broadbent and Pete Postlethwaite.
The series is probably best-remembered for the first appearance of Acorn Antiques - a mini-soap opera set in a small shop on the outskirts of Manchesterford. Passion, betrayal, murder, wobbly sets, marvellous overacting - it had the lot, including the legendary Mrs Overall played by Julie Walters.
Other memorable moments included sketches such as "Shoe Shop", "Family Planning" and " Two Soups " ; morning TV's Margery and Joan; the snobby continuity announcer "I'd like to apologise to viewers in the North. It must be awful for them." and some great songs - including the amorous deliberations of Barry and Freda in the infamous "Let's Do It!" song.
